23 telecoms companies across 12 different countries have been exploring ways to integrate blockchain technology into their future development. Telecom companies are looking for ways to combine blockchain with the fifth-generation technology standard for cellular networks, 5G.

5G network has an enormous capacity for future communication, especially for mobility, IoT and other connected applications. The deployment of the huge quantity of nodes, the interconnection of all things, and the provision of services to each other pose new challenges to data security, data value, and exchange transaction models. In a blockchain conference back in 2019, China Telecom spoke about issuing blockchain-powered international standards for 5G networks, as well as blockchain SIM cards, as well as payments platforms that make use of blockchain technology.

One of the challenges that telecom companies face is the need to innovate in a very competitive market while reducing costs at the same time to keep their services at an affordable price range.

Blockchain technology is offering the telecom industry the perfect solution to one of its core requirements. Being able to hold historical records of users without worrying about data being tampered with, blockchain makes it possible to manage different aspects of the users’ accounts. Some of the blockchain applications in the telecom industry include automation of many internal operations such as billing systems, roaming, and supply chain management.

Automating the billing systems using smart contracts will save telecom companies a lot of time, money, and prevent any possibility of fraud. Therefore, the entire process of accounting and auditing will be automated which will save more money for the telecom companies.

Most of the blockchain applications in telecommunication are similar to the financial sector. Facilitating financial transactions and transfers through blockchain technology is promising to take the telecom companies to a future where these companies are fully-functioning banks at the lowest possible costs. This step will be supported by the fact that telecom is one of the industries that have a high level of trust from its customers. Using blockchain-based applications will utilise this trust and increase it at the same time.
